Tuesday evening, KHS assisted in bringing in 18 of nearly 60 dogs who were part of a large-scale neglectful hoarding/breeding operation led by Animal Rescue Corps in rural Kentucky. The facility has been shut down by Hart County law enforcement.
Rescuers found 58 dogs, including pregnant females and nursing mothers. Most dogs were chained to trees and stakes in the woods, with only makeshift shelters of palettes, water barrels and plywood. Three litters of puppies were found in small wire cages on the muddy ground, completely exposed to the elements and without access to food or water. Many of these poor animals exhibit signs of obvious and chronic neglect, including eye injuries, fur loss, internal and external parasites, anemia and more.
All of the pregnant and nursing mothers have been relocated to our Sam Swope Lifesaving and Treatment Center to be evaluated by our medical team. While this is an incredibly heartbreaking situation, we are grateful to be able to provide the care and assistance these dogs so desperately need.
For now, these poor pups will rest and recover from their traumatic journey under our staff’s watchful eye. We will be sure to update you once we know more. In the meantime, donate via Facebook or online so we can continue to be there for the animals who need us most.
