Beagle Mama Welcomes Three Healthy Babies
A pregnant one-year-old Beagle came to our Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center over the weekend weighing only 23 pounds and somehow carrying three large babies. Knowing she was only days away from giving birth, Dr. Bewley offered to foster her. She lovingly named this expecting mama Winnie the Pooch and promised to stick by her side through it all.
When Winnie began laboring Monday evening, Dr. Bewley closely monitored her progress. After hours of contractions with no puppies to show for it, she knew it was time to call her team. Despite the late hour, our vet team rushed to the shelter to perform an emergency C-section. Surgery only took about 20 minutes, but it was all hands on deck. We stepped in to do what a mama would normally do – rub each puppy to keep them warm, remove the sac and help them take their first breaths.
Everything went to plan and now Winnie is the proud mom of two boys and one girl! Everyone is quietly nursing and getting to know each other under Dr. Bewley’s watchful eye, and as for us? We’re simply grateful that we were able to give Winnie the safe delivery and fresh start that she deserves.
