On May 17, the Kentucky Humane Society took in six very ill puppies from a shelter in Eastern Kentucky. The puppies all have parvovirus, or parvo, an extremely contagious virus that can lead to death for unvaccinated puppies. The puppies are lethargic and weak with vomiting and diarrhea. They are receiving IV fluids and are being treated round-the-clock by our shelter veterinary team.
This virus causes severe intestinal damage, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and secondary infections, and many shelters don’t have the resources to treat or isolate this terrible disease. We’re grateful that, with your support, KHS recently opened a Parvo Quarantine Ward in our Medical Isolation Wing, which allows us to provide attentive, individualized care to each puppy until they win this fight for their lives.
These puppies are very ill, and it will take a lot of work to get them better. You can help by donating. Your gifts help us continue to provide lifesaving care to every animal who comes through our doors. Thank you for your compassion and support!
