Animal welfare will break your heart and reshape it every single day. Our team knows this well and despite it all, they continue to show up for the animals who depend on them.
This season has brought unprecedented need to the Kentucky Humane Society. Every space in our shelter, from treatment wards to the adoption floor, is full. Today, over 500 cats, dogs, puppies and kittens currently in our care are counting on our team for medical care, training, enrichment and tender loving care. Just down the road at Willow Hope Farm, our team also begins each morning with the same commitment. Thirty-five horses, donkeys and mules depend on us to help them have brighter futures.
With this many animals, we could tell you hundreds of individual stories. We have sick kittens that need round-the-clock care. There are long-stay adult dogs who could urgently use breaks from the shelter. Not to mention horses who require intentional training as they transition to new careers. All around us are scared animals who are learning they are finally safe.
The reality is that caring for this many animals is not the work of a few people alone. Real change happens when an entire community chooses to be a part of the solution through fostering, volunteering and donating. And also by spaying and neutering. Preventing unwanted litters and protecting pets from preventable diseases helps ease the burden on shelters nationwide. Being proactive today will create lasting change and healthier futures for animals and the people who love them.
