Helping Pets AND the People Who Love Them

How KHS Keeps Pets in Loving Homes

It’s no secret that the Kentucky Humane Society serves thousands of cats, dogs and horses each year through adoption services. But did you know that there’s an entire team at KHS dedicated to preventing pets from entering shelters by assisting their guardians through tough times? That’s what our Pet Retention Services (PRS) department does every day for families in our community.

Just last week, at the end of a long day, a local family in distress reached out. A house fire had stolen everything from them in mere minutes – but thankfully, they and their three dogs were safe. They even had a temporary place to stay with their pets, but everything they needed to keep their pups happy and healthy had been lost in the fire. With their pets at the forefront of their minds, they called on KHS to help.

In less than twenty minutes, we were able to assist this family with every pet supply imaginable – crates, bowls, food, toys and even dog shampoo to wash the smell of smoke from their pets’ fur. PRS left no stone unturned and ensured this family had everything they could possibly need to support their pets while grappling with the unknowns ahead. Most importantly, they didn’t have to face the rough days ahead without their furry best friends by their sides to comfort them.

This is just one example of how our Pet Retention Services program supports pets and the people who love them – and how your donations make that possible. Every day, PRS meets people struggling to keep their beloved pets and provides compassionate, thoughtful counseling. In turn, these well-loved pets get to stay in their homes and out of the shelter, ensuring space remains available for the vulnerable animals in our community awaiting loving homes of their own. Thank you for standing beside us as we work to build a more compassionate community!
