Blind Dog Arrives at KHS in Heartbreaking Condition

Harold’s Road to Recovery Continues

Earlier this week we introduced you to Harold, a seven-year-old Shih Tzu who came to KHS in heartbreaking shape after our friends at Louisville Metro Animal Services rescued him from a life on the streets. This poor boy’s eyes were swollen and protruding from the sockets. He had so much scarring on his corneas that he was permanently blind and in obvious pain. Our veterinary team provided him with antibiotics, pain medication and medicated eyedrops to ease his discomfort, but knew that surgery was the only way to guarantee sweet Harold a full recovery.

Yesterday afternoon, our vet team performed a successful double enucleation surgery, removing both of Harold’s eyes. While in surgery, they discovered that his ears were also full of ear wax, most likely caused by years of untreated infections. Though they were able to clean his ears and remove the wax, they realized that Harold was also deaf once he woke up. While it hurts knowing that Harold was neglected so severely, we are glad to see him in such high spirits now that he’s no longer in pain.

Soon, Harold will enter a loving foster home so that he can acclimate to his new lifestyle away from the stress of the shelter. There, he will learn how to navigate the world with smells and vibrations, rather than sights and sounds. It will take him some time to adjust, but we know that this resilient, loving boy will find his way. For now, Harold is curled up in the laps of our staff, getting all of the tender loving care he’s craved for so long. Please continue donating in Harold’s honor so that we can continue to provide the broken, abused and neglected animals in our community with lifesaving medical care. All gifts made before December 31st will be matched up to $50,000 thanks to an anonymous supporter who loves animals just as much as you.

Senior Shih Tzu Needs Your Help

Harold, a seven-year-old Shih Tzu mix, recently came to our Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center after he was found as a stray by Louisville Metro Animal Services. His condition is simply heartbreaking. Harold’s eyes were swollen and protruding from the sockets, leaving him blind. We can’t imagine the pain and confusion that poor Harold has been enduring while fending for himself on the streets.

We quickly found that Harold’s corneas were scarred and his eyes riddled with infection, all likely caused by years of untreated injuries. Because of his condition, Harold is blind and he shakes in fear, not knowing where he is or what may happen next. Our veterinary team is compassionately reassuring him that he is safe while providing him with pain medication, antibiotics and medicated eye drops. Harold will undergo a double enucleation surgery in the coming days to remove the infected eyes and relieve him of the immense pain he’s lived with for so long.

Please donate today and Give Hope to vulnerable animals like Harold. Thanks to an anonymous donor, ALL gifts made before December 31 will DOUBLE up to $50,000 to support TWICE as many abused, neglected and abandoned animals in our community. Thank you for caring!
