Hurricane Animals Coming to KHS – How You Can Help

Our hearts go out to all the communities, people and animals impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. KHS is partnering with BISSELL Pet Foundation to help hurricane-impacted shelters by bringing animals – all of whom were unowned and in a shelter before the storms hit – to the Kentucky Humane Society on Monday. As animal lovers, we know that many of you will want to help. Click here to learn more.

  1. Donations: KHS is in need of supplies to care for vulnerable animals coming to us from out of state; our number one need is towels. You can donate through our Amazon or Chewy Wish Lists or drop off supplies in person. Monetary donations are always appreciated. Don’t forget to double your impact by seeing if your company will match your donation!
  2. Foster Caregivers: Would you temporarily open your home and heart to a foster animal? KHS provides all supplies, making this experience no cost to you. You can:
    • Foster current KHS animals, which then allows us to make space for our new arrivals
    • Foster animals coming to Kentucky from hurricane-impacted shelters
Click here to apply. If your home is a good fit for one of our animals, a member of our foster team will reach out to discuss details.
  3. Volunteers:We need volunteers to help care for the animals who are coming to KHS from hurricane-impacted shelters. Click here to sign up. Must be 18+.
    • Tasks include: feeding, cleaning and walking dogs; feeding, cleaning and socialing cats
    • Shifts are available at our retreat (located at Gene Snyder & Taylorsville Rd) from October 15-22. You can sign up for 8-11 a.m. and/or 2-5 p.m.
    • New volunteers should indicate “Hurricane Relief” when creating their profile.
  4. Adoptions: By adopting an animal currently at KHS, we are able to make space for animals in urgent need. Without open kennels, we cannot welcome new animals into our care. By adopting, you’ll create space in our shelter for more animals who need our help. The BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness, is partnering with KHS to host an “Empty the Shelters” waived-fee adoption event for adult dogs and cats (1 year+) now through October 20.
