“Caring Community” Adoption Event To Help Find Urgently Needed Homes for Dogs
Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) is waiving adoption fees for adult dogs during its Caring Community adoption event, which takes place starting this Friday, January 13 through Friday, January 20 at KHS’ Main and East Campus Adoption Centers.
Like shelters across the country, KHS is experiencing an increase in the number of animals being surrendered to our shelter. Owner surrenders and other intakes have skyrocketed nationwide by 9.5 percent in the past year, while adoptions are down. KHS has recently taken in a number of at-risk animals from local shelters, as well as 29 dogs from Eastern Kentucky shelters that remain overwhelmed with homeless animals as a result of the flooding in July.
The goal of the Caring Community event is to help find loving homes for the animals currently in KHS’ shelter to free up space so they can rescue more dogs and cats from overcrowded shelters in Louisville and Kentucky. As the largest animal adoption agency in Kentucky, many overcrowded shelters across the state rely on KHS to bring their animals to safety and find them loving homes. KHS can only help if there is space in the shelter to accommodate additional animals.
“We are relying on our compassionate community to help save the lives of hundreds of our community’s animals during this adoption event,” said Karen Koenig, Vice President of Animal Welfare, KHS. “If you’ve been thinking of adopting, now is the time. You’re not just giving an urgently needed home to an animal in need, you’re freeing up space so that we can save the lives of animals from across our state who are more at risk than they’ve been in years.”
The KHS adoption fee for dogs is usually $200, so the event offers significant savings for families and individuals who are looking to adopt their new best friend. Jefferson County adopters will still be required to pay a $10.50 licensing fee. Donations are gratefully accepted.
