Petco Foundation Awards KHS $50,000 to Expand Cat Lifesaving

In May Petco Foundation announced that is has awarded the Kentucky Humane Society $50,000 to increase its lifesaving capacity for cats.

The Petco Foundation presented KHS with a check for $50,000. The money will be used to hire a cat coordinator, purchase cat kennels, provide veterinary care and increase the number of cats it saves through rural shelter transports, according to KHS.

Cats are considered the species most at-risk of being put down in many rural county shelters, according to KHS. This is due to overpopulation and lack of local adopters.

“With this Petco Foundation grant, KHS will be able to help other shelters throughout Kentucky save lives by transporting shelter cats to KHS for adoption and by providing support to shelters so they can reduce the number of cats entering their doors,” said Karen Koenig, KHS Vice President for Animal Welfare.

The Petco Foundation has invested more than $250 million in animal welfare work across the country since 1999, according to a release. They have more than 4,000 animal welfare partners and strive to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs, spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, and serve and therapy animals.
