Since February 2005, Tracy Smith has made a difference in the lives of thousands of animals. On her 14-year KHS anniversary, we are happy to announce Tracy Smith as our Volunteer of the Month.

Every Wednesday, rain or shine, Tracy can be found at the Sam Swope Pet TLC socializing and exercising dogs in the shelter. Tracy often donates 5+ hours of her time each week to ensure that the animals get the proper attention and walks that they deserve. While also at the shelter, Tracy assists with cleaning and making enrichment treats for the pets. Her greatest joy of volunteering are the “hundreds of puppy kisses and discovering my love for senior pups and kitties,” Tracy recalls.

Aside from volunteering at the Sam Swope Pet TLC, Tracy donates her time with our special events, including Tuxes and Tails and co-chairing Picture Your Pets with Santa (PYP). One of her favorite memories from PYP is “seeing all the different animals coming to see Santa, such as a baby goat and a piglet.”

She encourages others to get involved with the shelter by volunteering with a friend or family member. Each week, Tracy partners with two other volunteers saying that “it’s easier and more rewarding to work with a companion.” Tracy also advises new volunteers to “walk dogs you feel more comfortable with and don’t be scared to ask someone if you need anything.”

When not volunteering, Tracy works as the Floral Lead/Designer for Kroger. Outside of work, Tracy can be found with her dog, Laine, and her two cats, Hersey and Baby. She also cares for her brother’s dogs, Coco and Chewey. Shopping, Zumba classes and watching television with her pets are some of Tracy’s favorite things to do.

Pictured with Tracy is Chilly, a seven-year-old Mountain Cur/Border Collie mix. A senior dog who enjoyed extra love from Tracy one Wednesday afternoon.

We’d like to thank Raising Cane’s for sponsoring our Volunteer of the Month!
